Hey, I'm Whitney!

I’ve been traveling the globe and writing about it since 2006, first solo, then with my husband, and then with our daughter. When my healthy, strong husband passed away mid-flight in January 2025, I became a solo parent traveler in an instant. It was the beginning of a life I never expected, but I knew I still wanted to show our daughter the world.

Even as a widow with an infant, I choose to see the passport as half full, not half empty. So, whether you’re new to travel or just need encouragement to keep going, I want the Half Full Passport to be a resource for single parents, the grieving, and travelers everywhere. Welcome.

The Most Useful Winter Gear for Traveling Babies

Babies are happier overall when they get time outdoors. One problem: Winter. Parents (myself included), and particularly first-time parents, sometimes get too nervous about our babies getting cold. Here is the most useful winter gear I’ve found for traveling with my baby girl, Iris.

Why You Should Take Your Baby to Germany’s Christmas Markets

My daughter and I just got home from an amazing trip to visit the Christmas Markets in Germany. A friend who lives there invited us to join her for a week, and we were delighted to do so! Lots of people were excited for us, saying it would be such a fun thing to do with my baby girl. Many people were envious because this was a bucket list trip for them, and they couldn’t wait to see my photos. Some others, of course, totally tried to tell me it would be dangerous, or too hard to go so far with a baby, or they would never do that and could never understand why I would want to. Well, for everyone with an opinion, here are six reasons why you should take your baby to Germany’s Christmas Markets!

The 5 Best Reasons to Travel with Help as a Single Parent of a Baby

Have you ever considered bringing help with you on a trip with your baby? It seems extravagant, I’ll admit. But after unexpectedly becoming a single parent to a six-month-old, I knew I needed help in order to keep traveling. I told my husband in jest, just three days before he died, “I don’t have enough hands to be a single parent.” And it’s true. I don’t have enough hands. That’s why single parents need help. Don’t believe me? Here are the 5 best reasons to travel with help as the single parent of a baby.

The Best Snacks for Babies and Toddlers on a Plane

I’m amazed at how many kid snacks are more like a bite of air, not a bite of food. Because my daughter can’t yet eat a burger or hold a pizza or fit a sandwich in her mouth, I definitely need to bring food for her on our flights. I can nurse her as needed, but at this point, she needs the extra nutrition and calories from solid foods. It was pretty challenging at first, because I wasn’t used to feeding a baby on the go. So, I’ve pulled together the best baby and toddler snacks on a plane!

What It’s Like to Take a Baby on a Nile Cruise

Was I nuts for this? Maybe. But we had a great time! When my friend invited my daughter and me to go on a Nile cruise, I jumped at the chance. My husband and I had taken a Nile cruise on our first trip to Egypt, before our daughter was even a thought in our minds. After he passed away when she was just six months old, I wanted to make memories with her that also helped me remember my husband.
