Hey, I'm Whitney!

I’ve been traveling the globe and writing about it since 2006, first solo, then with my husband, and then with our daughter. When my healthy, strong husband passed away mid-flight in January 2025, I became a solo parent traveler in an instant. It was the beginning of a life I never expected, but I knew I still wanted to show our daughter the world.

Even as a widow with an infant, I choose to see the passport as half full, not half empty. So, whether you’re new to travel or just need encouragement to keep going, I want the Half Full Passport to be a resource for single parents, the grieving, and travelers everywhere. Welcome.

I was a little disappointed not to have the chance to try the more “unique” Mongolian fare like horse, marmot, or camel. I love to try unique foods all over the world. Tourism to Mongolia is light, so I was expecting to be able to find the authentic foodstuffs more easily, but I think the places we went (Ulaanbaatar and Nalaikh) were more tourism-heavy, which was a-okay, but it meant we got the “watered down” version of the local food. Nonetheless, I did zero-in on the most authentic food on the menu wherever we went. Here are the best foods we ate in Mongolia!

I kept the info under the radar because I didn’t want my parents or well-meaning friends to worry. Syria is not exactly a relaxing vacation destination, and at the time I visited, the ceasefire and negotiations between Iran and the US and Israel was still very much in flux. So, here’s the long answer to your burning question: Is Syria safe to visit?

One thing to prioritize when traveling with a toddler? Animals! My daughter is fascinated with all animals–even if she’s sometimes not interested in touching them–or letting them touch (or lick) her.
