Bonjour! We recently took a day trip to Strasbourg, France, for their Christmas Market, and we loved every moment! It’s a two-hour drive from Wiesbaden, where we were staying, and I’d wanted to visit for years. It was the perfect opportunity to make a day trip out of it, and I’m so glad we did. If you’re staying in Frankfurt, Wiesbaden, Mainz, or the surrounding area, consider making a day trip to this fairytale town with its long history of mixing French and German cultures. Here’s how to make a Christmas Market day trip to Strasbourg, France!

Get There

Strasbourg is located at the edge of eastern France, just a few miles from the border with western Germany. It’s about two hours from Wiesbaden or Frankfurt by car, or about 3.5 hours by train. We chose to rent a car and drive, which worked out great because my 17-month-old daughter had a chance to nap on the way there and on the way back!

Eat and Drink This

Christmas Market food is like fair food, but a little less over-the-top. I love all the sweets, crepes, sausages, potatoes in every form, pizza-esque breads, and, of course, warm beverages. France’s version of Glühwein is Vin Chaud, or “hot wine.” But for children and non-drinkers, you’ll also find hot chocolate, hot fruit juices, tea, and non-alcoholic hot wines. Eat at a standing table, or eat on the go and enjoy as you browse the stalls for gifts.

Go See

Strasbourg is scenic all year round, but it goes all out at Christmas! The town has been dubbed the “Capital of Christmas,” and it takes that title very seriously. The buildings are decorated, lit up, and begging to have their picture taken. And don’t miss the Strasbourg Cathedral while you’re here as well. I mean, how could you miss it? The Christmas Market is right in front of it! The cathedral is beautiful on a normal day, but at Christmas, there is even more to see.
