How does a single mom and widow relax in Granada? She treats herself to an authentic hammam, also known as a Turkish Bath! I was looking for a spa in the old city where I could book a massage for the first anniversary of my husband’s death. I knew I needed something to look forward to, something my husband would have wanted me to do for myself.
When my local friend told me that Granada has several hammams and suggested I find one for that day, I knew that was the best thing to do. I chose Al-Andalus Hammam, reputed to be the most beautiful in the city, and it was the special experience I was hoping for. Here is everything you need to know about the Al-Andalus Hammam in Granada, so you can book your appointment when you visit for yourself.

What is a Hammam?
The word hammam is an Arabic term literally meaning “spread of warmth.” You will find hammams throughout the Middle East and Northern Africa, primarily in Islamic countries, but not exclusively. These are public bathhouses or spas, often including steam, incense or essential oils, and pools (or “baths”) of different temperatures. Granada and the surrounding region was an Islamic area for hundreds of years. Many Islamic elements of architecture, culture, and cuisine remain, which is why you’ll find hammams in Granada.

The Al-Andalus Hammam
I chose Al-Andalus after asking around about the best hammam experience. This was going to be a challenging day for me, so of course I wanted the best experience possible. The response was unanimous: Al-Andalus. And I can attest: It is gorgeous. I am already partial to Islamic architectural features–the beautiful tile work, the arches, the ornate details, etc. From your first step into the lobby, you’ll feel as though you’ve stepped back in time and to a different place.
Know Before You Go
- BYOS (Bring Your Own Suit): The Al-Andalus Hammam in Granada is co-ed, and bathing suits are required. I visited Granada in January, so I was woefully unprepared in this regard. If you’re like me and need a bathing suit, you can find one at Decathlon, the local sport store!
- No Shoes Allowed: No need to bring shower shoes, as shoes of any sort are not allowed.
- Shower Time: You (and everyone else) will be required to shower before and after your hammam experience, with luxury soap, shampoo, and conditioner provided.
- Towels Provided: Upon entry, you will be given a bath towel to shower after your experience, and a Turkish towel to have with you in the hammam.
- Reserve in Advance: Space is limited, so you won’t be overcrowded during your visit, but that also means it’s essential to book your reservation in advance, especially in the spring and fall high seasons. Check their website for availability.

The Hammam
The Al-Andalus Hammam in Granada boasts five pools, or baths: Two cold, two hot, and one warm. I spent the entirety of my time in the hot and warm baths. The water felt so nice on my skin, especially since the day was quite cold outside. There were a few couples in the hammam, and I couldn’t help but think it would be a nice date activity. Maybe I’ll be back in the future.
Throughout the experience, there was light, relaxing music playing, adding to the ambience. The candlelight made the hammam feel very moody. Honestly, if there had been a couch I could have taken a nap, I was so relaxed! Silence is required, so the only sounds were those of water, the music, and the occasional steam being released from the walls of one of the baths.
I booked a 30-minute hammam experience, and a 60-minute massage, and I’m so glad I did both, not only the hammam, and not a shorter massage. My Love Language is physical touch, and as a single parent to a toddler, I certainly shoulder my share of stress and anxiety. This was the perfect way to spend such an unfortunate anniversary. I believe this is exactly what my husband, Steve, would have wanted me to do that day.

The Massage
An attendant came to find me when it was time for my massage, according to the wrist band I had been given at the beginning of my visit. She led me upstairs to the massage area and offered me tea while I waited for the room to be prepared. The waiting area was bright and white, quite a contrast to the dim light of the hammam downstairs. It was beautiful, in keeping with the look and feel of the rest of the experience.
I was required to keep my bathing suit on during my massage, but pull it down to my waist for the treatment. This was not the way I was used to receiving a massage, but it was easy enough to do it that way. I was given a choice of scented oil, and I chose one that smelled sweet and floral. The description claimed it promoted joy and positivity, both of which I needed in spades that day. I left feeling refreshed and loose, ready to face the rest of my day.

My Experience
I know what you’re thinking: Where was the baby?! Not to worry. Because of the anniversary of my husband’s passing, a friend (and fellow young widow) had come to keep me company for the week and keep Iris, my daughter, while I did a few things for myself that week. I’m so grateful–I definitely could not have spent the time away from her without my friend’s help.
This was one of the most relaxing experiences I’ve ever had. I actually loved being disconnected, having nothing to keep up with (i.e. my phone), and taking my time among the pools. I drank sweet, hot tea at my leisure, and enjoyed carefully choosing my favorite scent of the oil for my massage. The soft, relaxing music and candlelight truly helped me become calm and relaxed. I would be delighted to visit again, and I can highly recommend that you make an appointment on your own trip to Granada. For more, please visit their website and make a reservation here.
