Traveling with kids is never easy, per se, but as a single parent? It’s downright daunting. Even as a professional traveler, I personally still get overwhelmed sometimes! But I’ve had to do it quite a lot since my husband passed away, and I’ve tried a wide variety of gear to help me make it happen. Here is the best travel gear for single parents.

A Sturdy, Wearable Carrier

This tops the list because it’s what makes everything else work. I realize that not all babies and toddlers can be worn for one reason or another, but if you can wear yours, that keeps your hands free–you only have two, after all! If I ever forgot my carrier at home, I would 100% go back home for it. That’s how essential this piece of travel gear is for my travels! This one is fully adjustable, can be worn on your front or back, and rated for children up to 45 lbs. My daughter loves it as much as I do, and I can’t imagine traveling without it.

A Durable Backpack or Diaper Bag

Your diaper bag becomes everything, right? It’s your purse (or “man bag”), your personal item, your tote, your snack bag, your toy box, etc., etc., etc. A backpack is going to be better for your back, so that’s what I always look for. I love that this one has so many pockets, so many snaps and zippers, so many cool features. I’m always looking for ways to be more organized, and my diaper bag has to be ultra-organized, especially on travel days. This one fits every bill!

Compression Packing Cubes

Speaking of organization, a good set of compression packing cubes is the travel gear that makes luggage actually convenient. My husband used to describe them as a “shelf in your luggage.” These are the only way I can keep my and my daughter’s clothes separated in my suitcase, and the best way to know where everything is when I’m jet lagged and trying to settle into a new accommodation. Compression packing cubes, in particular, allow me to be able to pack that one more item I always need to throw in right before we leave for a trip.

An Airline-friendly Stroller

A wearable carrier is great for travel days, but it’s not for everyone. A good travel stroller, though? It’s for everyone. Once your baby is big enough that carrying is too much for multiple days in a row, but not big enough to walk everywhere with you, a travel stroller is the best solution. Having one that folds up to practically nothing and fits in the overhead bin? Even better! I love this one below (don’t worry, it comes in more colors, not just pink).

A Good Car Seat Bag

I really underestimated the value of a good, sturdy car seat bag. After our car seat got left behind in Cairo in January, then got broken in transit a few months later, I gave up on the bright, red, high-visibility bag. Instead, I ordered this sturdy, soft-sided, backpack style car seat bag. It’s easy to carry, I can fill it up with extra diapers, and it’s definitely better for keeping the car seat safe and fully intact!
