The Best Mongolian Food We Ate in Mongolia

The food in Mongolia was… Hit or miss. Some of it was really delicious, and some was kind of bland. All of it was worth trying, though! I was a little disappointed not to have the chance to try the more “unique” Mongolian fare like horse, marmot, or camel. I love to try unique foods all over the world. Tourism to Mongolia is light, so I was expecting to be able to find the authentic foodstuffs more easily, but I think the places we went (Ulaanbaatar and Nalaikh) were more tourism-heavy, which was a-okay, but it meant we got the “watered down” version of the local food. Nonetheless, I did zero-in on the most authentic food on the menu wherever we went. Here are the best foods we ate in Mongolia!

The Best Tips Before You Visit Mongolia

When people ask, “Why would you go there?’ My response is, “Why not?” And that was definitely true of Mongolia. I got more, “Why would you go there” questions about Mongolia than almost anywhere else I’ve been. I don’t think it was intended to be rude; it was just genuine curiosity. It’s not a place Americans commonly visit (yet), and it’s sort of unknown outside of what we learned in Jr. High about Genghis Khan. But there are so many good reasons to visit! As always, I want you to be more prepared than I was for my first visit. I love to take notes on what I was googling in advance and what I learned there on the ground that I wasn’t expecting. So here they are, y’all: The best tips before you visit Mongolia!

What It’s Like to Visit a Nomadic Family in Mongolia

Our trip to Mongolia was fascinating in a lot of ways. One of the most intriguing? Visiting a nomadic family. A huge percentage of Mongolians–and Kazakhs living in Mongolia, it turns out–are living a traditional, nomadic life. To me, that means moving from place to place periodically, never staying in the same place twice. But that’s not true! That is a misconception I’m about to debunk for you. Here’s what it’s like to visit a nomadic family in Mongolia.

The 7 Best Things to Do in Ulaanbaatar

What is there to do in Ulaanbaatar? It’s the question I asked myself when United announced their new non-stop route from NRT-UBN. It’s such a unique route for an American carrier; it’s a 5th freedom flight, meaning the route doesn’t touch down in tue airline’s home country. It’s also a place that hadn’t previously been on my radar, but suddenly was. So I started researching. After dreaming, planning, and finally visiting for myself, here are the 7 best things we did in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia!
