My favorite thing to do when I travel? It’s hard to choose, but very near the top of the list is shopping for gifts! I love to pick up birthday and Christmas gifts from the places I travel, especially the destinations that I know loved ones would be interested in, but will likely never visit. When planning my trip to Syria, though, gifting wasn’t really on my radar. I had a few other things on my mind. When I arrived, however, I found that Syrians have some of the best gifts in the world. Soap in Aleppo
I am kind of obsessed with local soaps! I love buying them for myself, as well as for friends and family, and I love using them. Little did I know that Aleppo is famous for its soap! More specifically, its laurel soap. They make it in all scents, colors, and sizes, but the classic version is a cube-shaped bar, naturally tan-colored, made and scented with laurel oil–as in from a laurel tree. You can find it in many shops in Aleppo, but there is one shop with a very special feature: The largest bar of soap in the world!

Mosaics in Damascus
You may have seen these in various countries around the Middle East. They’re usually wooden, inlaid with mother of pearl or other types and colors of wood, put together in such a way as to create a beautiful piece of art. Syria, and particularly Damascus, is known for it. You’ll find mosaic boxes, keychains, purses, jewelry, etc. I bought a pair of earrings for myself, and I absolutely love them! A few people I love will be getting mosaic boxes, possibly with something hiding inside. I love how beautiful these items are, and I love that they make great gifts!

Aleppo Chilis and Spices
Have a chef (or wannabe chef) on your gifting list? Or maybe you just know someone who likes spices and full flavor? Don’t leave Aleppo without some spices and their namesake chili! Aleppo chilis are known all over the world, and the food in Aleppo is known for its spiciness and flavorful dishes. You can find them at the local souks in Damascus, Aleppo, and beyond. Just know your airline’s powder rules. You may need to put these in your checked bag!

Brocade in Damascus
If mosaics are artwork, brocades are wearable art. These gorgeous, patterned fabrics line beautiful handbags and mosaic boxes, make lovely scarves, and are used to make tablecloths, clothing, and more. They utilize intricate and decorative patterns, and are made with natural silks, as well as gold and silver thread. Any woman on your list would be truly honored to receive something made of these luxurious fabrics.

Hand-painted Ceramics
My mom loves blue and white–anything blue and white! And you know what just about every culture has? Blue and white things. But even if you’re not into that particular color combo, you’re sure to find beautiful, hand-painted ceramics in shades and colors you love. I purchased four of the tiles below for my mom to do with as she chose, whether that’s to display them or use them as coasters or some other purpose. Each one was unique, yet the designs all went together. Not into the tiles? You can find bowls, traditional coffee or tea cups, plates, vases, and more all over Syria.
